Who we are?
The Madam Herself is a Non-Profit Organization that was established in 2018, that speaks directly to the restoration of African Women’s and girl’s Identity, Dignity Culture and Pride.
- Higher Education and Training Application workshops, designed for idle youth and grade 12 learners particularly in rural and historically disadvantaged communities.
- Inter-generational mentorship programs for girls and young women with the purpose of empowering and bridging the gap between older and younger women.
- Robust self-development programs and tertiary education preparation designed for teenage girls through a curriculum
called Royal Daughters. - Coaching of young women who are unemployed on employability and entrepreneur skills through a curriculum
called the royal Highnesses. The program further equips young women at institutions of Higher Learning and training on work preparedness or entrepreneurship. - Campaigning for women emancipation and gender equality.
- Conscientizing women on their rights.
- Promoting unity and tolerance/workmanship among
women. - Promoting women participation in male-dominated disciplines.

About founding director
Mbaliyezwe Madikizela, also known as “The Madam Herself, iMbokodo Engathintwa”, is a goal-driven and multi-talented young woman born and bred in the beautiful green city of Durban. Holding a Masters’s degree in Engineering, she is currently a PhD candidate in Chemical Engineering. Apart from her Engineering background, she has a passion and vast experience in radio presenting and is fascinated by TV presenting. Mbaliyezwe is a striving entrepreneur and owing to her humanitarian nature, is very much involved in outreach initiatives around the province of KZN, through the NPO called “The Madam Herself.” The NPO seeks to add value to less fortunate young women and girls, furthermore, inculcate a sense of hope to the marginalised. Among other things, Mbaliyezwe in her determination to make education fashionable in her lifetime, occasionally conducts workshops in various disadvantaged communities, with the objective of equipping the youth to enroll into institutions of higher learning and training. Her leadership experience both community level and during her student life is endless. She has led at both regional levels and provincial levels. Her zeal to be the voice of the voiceless and the epitome of excellence in her generation is an ongoing endeavour.

Why an NPO?
Owing to the continuous spike in the rate of unemployment coupled with the retarded economic growth rate our country has been confronted with, this has given birth to immense anxiety and vulnerability in the youth. Education is no longer appealing because even those who have been privileged enough to access higher education and training and have obtained their qualifications are bedeviled with the daunting reality of unemployment. An idle youth typically is inseparable from factors such as substance abuse and crime. The outcry in our country, for an entrancing future, sustainable living and adequate life, echos older than any storm. The reality is that we are still at the dawn of our democracy. Today, we are still facing the challenge of youth who do not have a fundamental awareness of institutions such as NYDA and NSFAS and consequently some end up not furthering their studies, and if t they do, their transition into tertiary institutions becomes tedious, resulting in them being
unsuccessful. The gap between the privileged and the underprivileged remains prevalent. It is therefore essential that a substantial amount of effort is exhausted in sustainable mentoring, developing and equipping the marginalised youth, particularly those who are in rural and historically disadvantaged communities to mitigate these social issues.
Project Background
Aim
The aim of this initiative is to bridge the gap between the privileged and the marginalised young women and girls. This initiative focuses on primary sustainable mentorship because:
- Mentors have the experiences one can learn from to prevent making the same mistakes beginners make.
- Mentors provide information and knowledge.
- Mentors find ways to stimulate our personal and professional growth.
- Mentors offer encouragement and motivation.
- Mentors are a catalyst in personal development and confidence.
Goal
The goal is to establish a solid and incorruptible structure of continuous guidance of a girl child into womanhood with a firm emphasis on self-development, career guidance, and skills nurturing.
In the quest of putting bread on the table, some girl children from rural regions in tertiary education end up being subject to intergenerational relationships and sexual exploitation as they are vulnerable. This can be mitigated by having a senior person who is trustworthy and well trained to mentor and guide them in the course of their tertiary life. It is paramount for anyone to have an immediate role model whom they can be accountable to and learn from in order to be successful. Unfortunately, there is a lack of programs that solely focuses on the development of a rural girl child and ensuring that they have a fruitful future ahead of them. It goes without saying that a girl child is more vulnerable than a boy child.
Mentorship Program
Mentorship is the cornerstone of The Madam Herself NPO. Our mentorship
program is designed to be interdependent to ensure
sustainability. Members of the NPO take up the responsibility to either be a mentor, mentee or both depending on the level of study or age. The much younger girls are mentored and guided by the intermediate girls, and the intermediate girls are guided by seniors.

Empowering our young women
Royal Daughter Movement
The Madam Herself Royal Daughter Movement is designed for girls who are located in remote areas and disadvantaged communities that have quintile 1-3 schools. The Project is furnished by a robust curriculum which entales a number of assignments and missions that need to accomplished by the girls. The curriculum is centred around topics that are within their school curriculum. We currently have 200 girls who are enrolled in this project. We enroll girls are aged between 12 -18 years old or grade 7 to grade 12. The following aspects are focused on:

- Improvement of competencies
- Self defence and self awareness
- Self Devevolpment

Royal Highness Movement
The Madam Herself Royal Highness Movement is designed for young women in communities, tertiary institutions, and in the workplace and has the following aspects:
- Izwi leMbokodo (Voice of Women) a platform for young women to have intergenerational engamnetment through dialogue and debate.

Academic Desk
The Madam Herself NPO strives to be a catalyst in inspiring academic excellence in this generation. The academic Desk is designed for youth both male and female in grade 12 and idle youth in communities. Our ultimate goal is to make education fashionable to the youth. We focus on the following:
- University, TVET college, and NSFAS application workshops.
- Matric program for repeating learners.
- Bursary that assists in registration in institutions of higher learning and training

Sisterhood Seminars
The purpose of The Madam Herself Annual Sisterhood seminars is to empower marginalized young women from disadvantaged backgrounds, equip to them unleash their full potential in all avenues, encourage seeking success as a fundamental priority, promote academic excellence, equip them with knowledge around women health, personal development, encouraging entrepreneurship, business and leadership and most importantly to plow back to their communities. The uniqueness of these seminars is that, it targets young women who are unemployed and cannot attend women empowerment seminars because they cost exorbitant prices. We aim to bring forth a high quality women’s seminar full of robust content that an average young woman wouldn’t be able to afford to attend but we host at absolutely no cost to them. Ours is very clear, all women deserve to get knowledge, to be empowered and to grow, this is not a privilege of only the economically sound only.
